The Three Pigs

by David Wiesner

Storyline: This is not your typical story. This is a story in many stories. The tale of the three pigs is retold in a new manner. The swains are given a second chance to stand up the bad wolf.

It goes like this: The first pig built his house out of straws, the wolf came and blew it in and ate the pig up. The second pig built his house out of sticks, the bad wolf came again, blew the house in and ate the pig up. The third pig was luckier and wiser. He built his house out of bricks and when the bad wolf came he …. run away, along with the other two pigs in the story.
At that point we realized that all our characters were in the pages of a book. As the three pigs run away on a paper airplane they encounter other books that hold other stories. Then they make friends with the cat with the fiddle and with the magic dragon and decide to go back home, where they find the pig trapped in the last page. They put pack the house and the dragon blew the wolf away from the story. And they lived happily ever after.

Characters: pig, pigs, wolf, cat with the fiddle, cow, dragon

Illustration: David Wiesner is the illustrator of this book. His character drawings are realistic on shape and color. The way the images tells the story is though unusual. The peace is broken by the blank or almost blank pages, partially colored pages or disruptive illustration, all meant to show that we are in a story within a story.
