Barnaby Never Forgets

By Pierre Collet-Derby

Storyline: Barnaby is a school age rabbit (yes, rabbits go to school too) that has a problem: he is, sometimes, forgetful. But who isn’t, you’d say and you’d be right. Barnaby, for example, forgot where he put his glasses (yes, yes, rabbits can wear glasses too, can’t they?). He’s down on his knees, on his room, under his bed, stirring up all the all the nick-knacks spread all over the floor. He looks on his trash can and even on his fish tank. Nothing! He’ll be late at school again, he thinks. Then, as he praise himself for being usually great at remembering things (that he should remember anyway), he looks in the bathroom mirror, ready to brush his teeth, and voila! There they are. The glasses. On his very nose.

Now, as he goes down the steps and strolls out the door to go to school, he admits that sometimes he forgets things. He can think of a handful of occasions when he forgot to do a very important thing that resulted in a disaster. Like when all the rats in the neighborhood had a party in his backyard because he forgot to put the trash in the garbage can. Or, when he forgot to take his wet bathing suit out of his backpack. Imagine the mess. Sometimes, though, he finds a forgotten dollar bill from his grandma, or an old treat.  Like the half eaten lollipop from the last year birthday party. After all, he decides, being forgetful is not always bad.

Except when you go to school and the school is closed. And guess what. Yep, that had just happen. As Barnaby arrives to his beloved school (we hope) he finds the gates closed. Because, he just remembered, it’s Saturday. And, ops, don’t look. He forgot to put on his pants!

Characters: Barnaby, a forgetful but funny rabbit, who go to school in his underwear on a Saturday morning.

Illustration: Pierre Collet-Derby is also the illustrator of this book. Barnaby, the rabbit, is a cartoonish-like character, doodled with few strokes. With three loose locks on top of his head and blue round glasses, Pierre Collet-Derby creates a likeable character. The illustration that follows the story depicts big and bold scenery that and the rabbit looks animated and ready to spring into action. The colors are straightforward but vivid and the details do not crowd the page. I particularly like that the text of the story is written in bold black fat letters, easy on little as well as on old eyes.
