Auntie Loves You
By Helen Foster James
Illustrated by Petra Brown
The takeaway: Rather than being a story with a point, this book is a keepsake: and auntie gift for her niece or nephew.
Storyline
Simply written and illustrated, this book is an aunt’s testimony of love for her siblings’ child. Written in rhymes, it is easy to read. One can also memorize it very easy.
An aunt’s affection for her nephews and nieces can be very different from a mother’s love. They bound together like, as the author puts it, carrots and peas, beaches and sand, shells and seas.
Play, giggles and laugh are the liaison between the two. They are best buddies, because they enjoy each other’s company. Nothing is to childish, too silly, to animated, for an auntie. Together, they dance and sing, make new games, swing, make yummy treats and basically play all day. When the sun is lowering behind the horizon, the auntie gives her niece/nephew a good night hug, telling them she loves them. And the kids go to sleep on a bed of grass and shells. (?) Because this is a bunny family!
Characters
A bunny kid and two bigger bunnies…
Illustration: Petra Brown is the illustrator of this book. She uses digital tools to create her art which is not far from a more traditional one. There’s soft colors and lines, big pictures that fill the pages and an overall message of love and comfort.
